Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Common Queries about HonTitan Titanium Rod

What is the current price of titanium rod per kg?

The price of titanium rods fluctuates based on the raw material cost (Titanium Sponge) and market demand. Generally, Commercially Pure (CP) Grade 2 is more affordable, while Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) commands a higher price due to its alloying elements (Aluminum and Vanadium) and complex processing.

Is Grade 5 titanium pure? What is the difference between Gr2 and Gr5?

No, Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is not pure titanium; it is an alloy consisting of 90% Titanium, 6% Aluminum, and 4% Vanadium. This composition gives it superior tensile strength (approx. 895 MPa), making it ideal for aerospace and automotive applications.

In contrast, Grade 2 is Commercially Pure (CP) titanium (>99% Ti). It offers excellent corrosion resistance and formability, making it the standard choice for chemical processing, heat exchangers, and medical equipment. HonTitan stocks both grades in large quantities.

Is titanium rod stronger than steel?

In terms of strength-to-weight ratio, titanium is significantly superior. Grade 5 titanium offers strength comparable to many steels but is 45% lighter. This makes titanium rods the preferred material for applications where weight reduction is critical without sacrificing durability, such as in racing connecting rods and aerospace structural parts.

Additionally, unlike steel, titanium possesses a natural oxide layer that provides exceptional corrosion resistance against saltwater and acids.

Why is titanium considered difficult to manufacture and machine?

Titanium has low thermal conductivity and a high tendency for "springback," which can cause heat buildup and tool wear during machining. Producing high-quality rods requires specialized expertise.

At HonTitan, we utilize advanced Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) furnaces and precision centerless grinding equipment. Our experienced engineers strictly control the processing parameters to ensure every rod meets h6/h7 tolerance standards and is free from internal defects (verified by Ultrasonic Testing).

Why source titanium rods from HonTitan in China?

China is the global leader in titanium production, and HonTitan is strategically headquartered in Xi'an, the technological and logistical hub of Shaanxi Province (the epicenter of China's titanium industry).

Being in Xi'an allows us to access premium raw materials within the province while benefiting from the city's advanced international logistics network. This ensures that we can deliver ASTM/AMS compliant titanium rods to global clients faster and more efficiently than remote factories.
