Weight Calculation Formulas

Select the formula for your cross-section shape. Substitute the density ρ (g/cm³) of your specific grade from the table above.

Round Bar

Solid circular cross-section. Inputs: diameter d (mm), length L (mm).

W/m = π × d² ÷ 4 × ρ ÷ 1000
W/pc = W/m × L ÷ 1000

Round Tube

Hollow circular section. Inputs: outer diameter OD (mm), wall thickness t (mm), length L (mm).

W/m = π × t × (OD − t) × ρ ÷ 1000
W/pc = W/m × L ÷ 1000

Sheet / Plate

Flat rectangular section. Inputs: length L (mm), width W (mm), thickness T (mm).

W/pc = L × W × T × ρ ÷ 1,000,000

Hexagonal Bar

Regular hexagon section. Input: across-flats dimension S (mm), length L (mm).

W/m = (√3 ÷ 2) × S² × ρ ÷ 1000
≈ 0.8660 × S² × ρ ÷ 1000

Square Bar

Solid square cross-section. Inputs: side length a (mm), length L (mm).

W/m = a² × ρ ÷ 1000
W/pc = W/m × L ÷ 1000

Square Tube

Hollow square section. Inputs: outer side OD (mm), wall thickness t (mm), length L (mm).

W/m = (OD² − (OD−2t)²) × ρ ÷ 1000
W/pc = W/m × L ÷ 1000
Accuracy and Limitations

Why Calculated Weight May Differ from Actual

The calculator uses ideal geometry and reference densities. Four factors cause divergence from real weighed results.

Density Variation

Alloy batch composition, heat treatment state, and applicable standard (ASTM vs GB/T vs JIS) introduce ±0.5–1% density variation between suppliers and heats.

Dimensional Tolerance

OD, wall thickness, plate thickness, and side dimensions carry manufacturing tolerances per ASTM B265/B337/B338. A ±0.1 mm tolerance on a 10 mm wall adds ~2% weight uncertainty.

Process Factors

Weld seams, chamfers, fillets, surface treatments (anodizing, pickling), and cut-end geometry are not captured by the formula model and affect actual weight.

Use-Case Boundary

This tool is designed for sourcing, budgeting, and material selection. For commercial settlement, use certified mill test reports or actual weighbridge results.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Technical Questions

Use the formula for your shape: for round bar, W/m = π × d² ÷ 4 × ρ ÷ 1000 (kg/m), where d is diameter in mm and ρ is density in g/cm³. For Grade 2 titanium (ρ = 4.51), multiply the result by 4.51.
Most commercially pure titanium grades (Grade 1, 2, 3, 4) have a density of 4.51 g/cm³. Ti-6Al-4V (Grade 5/TC4) is 4.43 g/cm³. Ti-3Al-2.5V (Grade 9) is 4.48 g/cm³.
Use the formula W/m = π × d² ÷ 4 × 4.51 ÷ 1000. For a 20mm diameter Grade 2 bar, this gives approximately 1.419 kg/m. Use the calculator above for any diameter and grade.
W = L × W × T × ρ ÷ 1,000,000 (kg), where dimensions are in mm and ρ is density in g/cm³. A 1000 × 1000 × 3 mm Grade 2 plate weighs approximately 13.53 kg.
